Why is this protection such a good deal?
The short answer: because AKKO is using technology to make facilitating and managing protection for your stuff more efficient and cost less. Typical insurers charge really high fees on the insurance and protection plans you buy because of the work involved in processing policies and claims, as well as the cost to advertise and market the coverage to consumers.
At AKKO, we’re trying to change that so that customers can get great and affordable protection that’s simple and all-inclusive, instead of being taken advantage of by purchasing multiple protection plans and insurance for all the stuff they own individually.
Doesn't my Renter's Insurance protect me against this stuff?
Renter’s or Homeowner’s insurance WILL NOT protect your items against Accidental Damages, such as:
> Cracked Screens
> Spills & Liquid Submersion
> Accidental Damage (like drops)
> Damage & Malfunctions from Accidental Damage/Drops
So if you were to drop your phone, you’d be on your own for the $250 screen replacement. But with an AKKO plan, your coverage would nearly pay for itself within the first year!
Your Renter’s or Homeowner’s policy WILL cover Theft, however, your policy will typically have a $250 – $1,000 deductible and if you make a claim, your rates can increase because the claim gets reported and added to the equivalent of your “credit score” for insurance.
So would it ever really be worth it to make a claim if your $800 smartphone got stolen? Probably not… Whereas with an AKKO plan, you could file a claim, pay only a $100 deductible, and the cost to repair or replace your device would be covered! Any claim made on your coverage plan also does NOT affect your insurance credit score and your rates also won’t increase because you file a claim, it’s always $15/month!
IMPORTANT NOTE: As many people learn the hard way… Auto Insurance DOES NOT cover items stolen during vehicle break-ins. Your Auto Insurance will cover the damage to your vehicle itself, such as a broken window. However, an AKKO plan will cover your items stolen from a vehicle break-in and you still only pay your $100 deductible to get replacements for the items that were stolen or damaged. (integrated car accessories or audio equipment like speakers/decks are not covered, see “what’s not covered” for full list of exclusions)
Does my Car Insurance cover theft from a vehicle break-in? (nope)
Car Insurance unfortunately DOES NOT cover the items that get stolen during a vehicle break-in, it only covers damages to the vehicle itself!
We hear from countless customers about this one… You’d think that “car” insurance would cover everything related to your car, right?
Well unfortunately, your car insurance is only that, insurance for your car including the damage it may do to other people’s property, car, or themselves.
If your car gets broken into, you’ll be on the hook for replacing any of the contents in your car which were stolen. This could be your laptop, backpack, bike, clothes, or whatever else you had in there.
You car insurance will pay for things like your broken window, or damaged door.
Are APPLE STORE repairs covered?
After you file a claim for your Apple devices, typically you’ll be directed to go to your closest Apple Store, but if you don’t live near one, or would rather go to a closer electronics repair shop, you can go there as well!
If your device has damages which one of our repair partners or a shop near you is unable to solve, we’ll help you get the work done straight through Apple.
So I only pay $99 ($49 for students) when any of my items are affected by Damage or Theft?
Yup! The amount you pay when something of yours is damaged or stolen is called your “deductible.”
It’s the amount we deduct from your payout for a claim. The reason insurance and protection plans contain a deductible is so that you are still motivated to be careful with your stuff.
But we make sure to set a deductible that’s at least easily affordable rather than the $250 – $400 deductibles on most other protection plans for phones, laptops, and other items or a renter’s or homeowner’s insurance policy.

What is the Deductible for Phones and other items on AKKO's protection plans?
The deductibles for phones is $29 – $99 per claim based on the phone’s model. $99 is also the max deductible even for Theft or total replacement claims! (more than half the price of other providers.) Click here to view the cost to protect your phone and the deductibles for repairs/replacements.
For our AKKO Plans all other items besides your phone are subject to a $99 deductible ($49 for students) for any incident of Accidental Damage or Theft.
This amount that is “deducted” from any reimbursement payout you receive exists so that individuals are still motivated to be careful with their stuff.
But with AKKO’s protection plans, we made sure to have the deductibles at least be set at easily affordable amounts rather than the $150 – $400 deductibles seen on many other protections plans for phones, laptops, and other electronics.
What is the coverage limit?
The AKKO Base Plans ($15/month for adults, $10 for students) includes $2,000 of reimbursement protection PER INCIDENT**. There are no annual reimbursement limits or a limit on the number of claims you may file.
—
**$2,000 PER INCIDENT means that if next week on Monday your phone is stolen, up to the replacement value of your phone is covered as long as that amount is less than $2,000.
If at another point in the same year you drop your laptop and the screen is smashed, up to the repair or replacement value cost of the laptop is covered as well as long as it’s less than $2,000.
But, there is not an annual limit of $2,000 which would be exhausted in case replacing your phone cost $900 and replacing your laptop had cost $1,500.
This demonstrates PER INCIDENT protection and the per incident reimbursement limit with an AKKO Plan is $2,000. There is not an annual reimbursement limit.
HOWEVER, if during a single incident someone steals your entire backpack, filled with your phone, and laptop, up to $2,000 total is covered to reimburse you for replacing those items and any other contents of your backpack, plus the backpack itself. So if the combined replacement cost was above $2,000 for all these items, you would only have coverage up to $2,000.
Higher PER INCIDENT coverage limits are available!
Once you’re registered, you can upgrade your coverage to a PER INCIDENT reimbursement limit as high as $6,000. But for a more common $3,000 – $5,000 PER INCIDENT limit upgrade, it’s only a few more dollars per month 🙂
The $2,000 PER INCIDENT limit is more than enough for the majority of users based on our studies and the claims rates of current members nationwide. But for those with more expensive items like a high-end laptop, or specialty gear like photography or music/audio equipment, the option to upgrade your limit is easily available. Simply contact us via the “billing” section of your account and we can upgrade your coverage limit.

We re-state all this information under this separate Frequently Asked Question because sometimes users don’t click through all questions/answers and we want to make sure all prospective customers are fully informed 🙂
NOTE: All plans are per individual and will only cover items that the individual owns. This means that if you file a claim, you must have proof of ownership of an item.
What items are NOT covered by an AKKO Plan?
Automobile, motorcycle, boat (including kayaks, canoes, or other watercraft with hulls), motor, aircraft or aircraft parts or any type of motorized land or aquatic vehicle or other conveyances or their accessories (including car stereos, GPS navigation devices, keyless entry), money in currency or coin, evidences of debt, letters of credit, passport documents, notes, securities, transportation tickets or any other tickets, pharmaceuticals, prescription or over- the- counter, artwork, professional or amateur, antiques or collectables, animals, firearms or ammunition, salesman samples, contact lenses, keys, artificial teeth or limbs, or merchandise for sale, forms of identification, including student ID’s and driver’s licenses.

- Surfboards are protected for theft and damage due to mishandling on airlines, accidental damage from non-airline transportation or use/handling not included.
Does an AKKO Plan cover Lost Items and Lost Phones?
If you were to “Lose” one of your belongings, you would need to evaluate the situation to determine if it fell under being theft, or what’s called “mysterious disappearance” (aka, you simply misplaced your belonging and have no idea where it went).
Use tools like Find My iPhone/Android to try and recover your phone, or similar services to track down a laptop/tablet. Take screenshots or record evidence of your attempts to recover your phone to provide the most complete set of evidence you can with your claims.
The coverage you get with an AKKO Plan will cover theft, but will not cover “mysterious disappearance.”
Can I add Multiple Phones to my AKKO Plan?
All plans are per individual and will only cover items that the named individual on the policy owns (gifts are OK). Plans cannot be shared with friends or family members.
Adult and Student Plan accounts may have up to (1) phone on their account. To add more phones, you must purchase additional Adult and/or Student Plans.

If you need to protect multiple phones for you and your family members, AKKO can give you a discount when you register (2) or more plans!

All plans protect your phones against Accidental Damage & Theft!
Best of all, in addition to everyone’s phones being protected, all their other personal electronics and belongings are protected too at no extra cost!
There’s a reason customers switch to AKKO and call the decision and “no-brainer.”
When does my coverage take effect?
For customers registered Nov. 3, 2020 and after:
Your protection with an AKKO Plan begins 12:01AM the day after your account has been created as long as you have activated your account and completed set-up and your payment is current.
To have protection be effective for your items, photos of them should be uploaded to your account in accordance with all guidelines and instructions listed in your account.
Protection for incidents of accidental damage may not be eligible for reimbursement if they occur within the first 30 days from your registration date. But if all requested information and evidence is provided to our team, the waiting period may not apply.
Photos of phones and tablets should be uploaded using the phone’s own cameras (front and rear) to provide pictures of the front (screen) and back sides of the device by taking the photos in front of a mirror. A photo of the phone’s “About” page in settings should also be provided by using another device (do not provide a screenshot) and the serial # of the device should be visible.
Photos of laptops and computers should be taken by including a photo of the device with the screen powered on and also displaying the “about” page showing the specs and serial # of the computer.
For customers registered prior to Nov. 3, 2020:
Your coverage is backed by NSSI, you can reference all terms of their coverage here: https://getAKKO.com/legal
Your coverage begins 12:01AM the day after your account has been created and payment is made. It may take up to a week to receive policy documentation from NSSI after your information has been submitted to them.
There is a 30 day waiting period for claims of accidental damage. Your coverage for theft, vandalism, and all other perils begins as soon as your coverage does.
Can I add items that are older or used to my coverage?
Yes!
The age or place you purchased your items does not matter. As long as an item is eligible for coverage, regardless of its age or if you purchased it used from a store or individual, you can add it to your plan and have it covered through AKKO. See what items are eligible for coverage here.
For items you purchased used or through a 3rd party marketplace platform such as Craigslist, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or OfferUp, request an email be sent to you by a seller stating the date you purchased an item, the amount paid, and what the item was. This can suffice as a purchase receipt should you be asked to provide one during a claim! You can follow this method including if you paid for items in cash and screenshot a payment you made via Venmo or another payment app or service like PayPal. Read more here about how purchase receipts are not required for coverage.

Does this coverage apply to damage to my Car or Motor Vehicle? What about items INSIDE my Car or Motor Vehicle?
NO. This coverage does not apply to any damage or theft or loss that affects your car or motor vehicle (such as a street scooter or motorcycle) or any items incorporated or mounted/installed on to the exterior/interior of your vehicle. You’d have to go through your Auto-Insurance for recovering losses.
However, your coverage DOES apply to items inside your car that are Damaged or Stolen so long as you provide proof of forced entry into the vehicle indicating that your doors/windows/trunk/cargo bags were closed and locked on the vehicle.
Just as with any other claims for Theft, you must also provide a copy of your filed police report.
Does an AKKO Plan cover Lost Items and Lost Phones?

The coverage you get with an AKKO Plan will cover theft, but will not cover “mysterious disappearance.”
Why is an AKKO Plan BETTER than Renter's Insurance?
Renter’s insurance (from Lemonade, Jetty, or other established insurance providers) typically covers losses to your property from damage or theft ONLY when you’re at home and DOES NOT cover Accidental Damage like a dropped phone or spilling coffee on your laptop.
Accidental Damage like Cracked Screens, Spills, and Drops are more than 12x as likely to happen than the losses that occur which Renter’s Policies will even cover…
Additionally, the deductibles on a Renter’s Policy for losses from damage like fires, floods, or a break-in are usually $250-$1,000…
That’s WAY higher than our $100 deductibles ($25 for students) for ANY claim filed. Whether it’s Accidental Damage, or Theft, Vandalism, or even a Fire/Flood, or natural disaster.
Plus, the cost of your renter’s or homeowners insurance coverage may also increase when you do file a claim…
Whereas the coverage you get when signing up with AKKO will never increase because you file a claim!
Why is this coverage such a good deal?
The short answer: because AKKO is using technology to make facilitating and managing protection for your stuff more efficient and cost less. Typical insurers charge really high fees on the insurance and protection plans you buy because of the work involved in processing policies and claims, as well as the cost to advertise and market the coverage to consumers.
At AKKO, we’re trying to change that so that customers can get great and affordable protection that’s simple and all-inclusive, instead of being taken advantage of by purchasing multiple protection plans and insurance for all the stuff they own individually.
Why have I never heard of AKKO before?
AKKO is a startup! But we are indeed a legitimate, California incorporated, and insured organization whose membership services include benefits for personal property protection and loss reimbursement.
AKKO was founded in 2018 initially approved for covering college students only with a unique coverage plan that protects all of your eligible personal items for only one simple and affordable monthly fee.
After working with a few large college organizations, AKKO began the process to get the same amazing coverage plan approved and ready to sell to anyone.
At the start of 2020, we soft-launched our AKKO Adult Plan! And now we’re trying to spread the word fast so people can start protecting the stuff they care about and rely on in an affordable and easy way.
AKKO’s primary focus is on making insurance and property protection easy and pleasant for the customer.
When accidents or theft happens, the last thing you as the customer should have to deal with is MORE negativity and frustration…
With AKKO, there are:
– No hidden fees
– No long lists of exclusions
– No restrictions on how old the stuff is you want to cover (or whether you purchased it used)
– No long phone waits when you file a claim or need assistance
– and no weeks or months long waits to actually get reimbursement for your losses…
We’re doing things different and are excited for you to try out our platform, get to know our company and team, and be able to say “Thank goodness I had AKKO…” when life’s bad and “oops” moments happen to you. 🙂
If I sign up now, will my phone or other item that is already broken be covered for repairs?
NO. Unfortunately that’s not how insurance works… 🙁
If you have any items that are currently broken (cracked phone screen, water damaged laptop, etc.) then you CAN NOT sign up and then file a claim to have those items fixed.
For an item to be eligible for coverage, you must:
1) have an active AKKO Plan and
2) have the item’s information uploaded to your account along with pictures of it in working and/or un-damaged condition. This means the screen must be able to power on, and you’ve taken photos of the item in accordance with the instructions within your account based on the item you are adding.
Then, if something happens to any of your items in the future, they’re covered!
However, if you do have an item that’s currently already damaged, sign up for an AKKO Plan now so that the next time some mishap happens, we’ll cover it!
Is my coverage valid when I Travel or am Studying Abroad?
YES! As long as you’re a U.S. or Canadian citizen/resident with our coverage, your items are fully protected when you travel or are living/staying abroad. ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD!
The same procedures apply for filing claims if any of your items are affected by accidental damage, theft, or vandalism and AKKO can send your reimbursements to you electronically in case you’re traveling for an extended period of time.
How can I upgrade my coverage to a higher limit?
To upgrade your coverage, just email us at [email protected] for help with changing your coverage plan. We’ll update your plan and confirm the changes with the insurance company so that your plan can have a higher coverage limit to accommodate your more expensive items, or a higher per incident limit for your stuff.
For Student Plans, we have coverage limits that range from $2,000 to $6,000 per incident in increments of $1,000, all with a $49 deductible.
For Adult Plans, we currently offer plans with per incident coverage limits of $2,000 – $6,000 in increments of $1,000, all with a $99 deductible.
If you want to protect multiple phones on a single plan, you may need to upgrade your coverage with an add-on or purchase additional AKKO Plans.
Can I cover a Phone that is Leased or Financed?
Yes! You may cover any phone which is yours and in your possession. You do not need to have your phone paid-in-full.
Many of our customers have phones paid for on installment plans through their cellular carriers or other retailers.
When you register, the same process applies for adding your phone to your account. For uploading a receipt, just download a PDF or take a screenshot of your most recent bill/statement from the cellular carrier or retailer showing your installment payment and the type of device.
What does an AKKO Plan protect me from?
- Cracked Screens
- Spills & Liquid Submersion
- Accidental Damage (like drops)
- Damage & Malfunctions from Accidental Damage/Drops
- Theft & Vandalism
- Theft of items from an unattended vehicle via forced entry (car break-ins)
- Fire, Flood, & Natural Disasters
- Power Surge by Lightning
We offer a 5% discount if purchasing (2) or more plans!
Just go here to register: REGISTER MULTIPLE PLANS
How can I cover multiple phones? Are there deals for family packages?
If you need to protect multiple phones for you and your family members, AKKO can give you a discount when you register (2) or more plans!
Each Adult and Student Plan account may have up to (1) phone on them. To add more phones, you must purchase additional Adult and/or Student Plans.
For a family of 4 for example, with 2 adults and 2 kids, you would register:
- (2) separate AKKO Adult Plans
- (2) separate AKKO Student Plans
Just go here to register: REGISTER MULTIPLE PLANS
All plans protect your phones against Accidental Damage & Theft!
Best of all, in addition to everyone’s phones being protected, all their other personal electronics and belongings are protected too at no extra cost!
There’s a reason customers switch to AKKO and call the decision and “no-brainer.”
If my phone or other items need to be completely replaced, how much money do I get to do so?
Replacements:
If your items are too extensively damaged (or were stolen) and you require a replacement device or item, we find the replacement value of the item by looking at the cost of refurbished items of the same make/model/year.
For example, if your iPhone X was stolen or completely destroyed, we would find the value of a refurbished iPhone X and your payout would be the cost of the replacement, plus sales tax if applicable, then subtracting your plan’s deductible ($29 – $99 for phones, and $99 for all other items for Adults and $49 for Students on our AKKO Plans).
We will not base the value of your item off of what used iPhone X phones are being sold for by random individuals on eBay or Craigslist. You also will not receive a reimbursement based on the value you initially paid for the phone when it was new.
The same process applies to claims for other electronics and personal items on your plan which are eligible for reimbursement.

Are unlocked phones covered?
With an AKKO Plan, you may cover any phone which is yours and in your possession. It does not matter what carrier you use or if your phone is unlocked or financed. Our AKKO Plan is only $15 per month and protects your unlocked phone against Accidental Damage & Theft along with nearly all your other personal electronics and gear at no extra cost!
When you register, the same process applies for adding your phone to your account. You will take pictures of its front and back to verify its working and undamaged condition.

Other Limitations:
1. Coverage for jewelry, watches, rings, and other items consisting of gold, silver, or platinum or furs is limited $1,000.00 for any one Loss.
2. Coverage for bicycles is limited to $1,000.00.
3. Property in a personally owned automobile is covered, provided that the vehicle was locked and windows are fully closed at the time of theft and there was visible evidence of forced entry into the vehicle.
—
We re-state all this information under this separate Frequently Asked Question because sometimes users don’t click through all questions/answers and we want to make sure all prospective customers are fully informed 🙂
NOTE: All plans are per individual and will only cover items that the individual owns. This means that if you file a claim, you must have proof of ownership of an item.
When my items are Damaged or Stolen, what do I do?
Simply log-in to your account and go to the “Claims” section. File a new claim and select the items that have been affected by damage or were stolen. You’ll have to provide an account of what happened along with proof of ownership if the item costs over $100.
Proof of ownership is provided by a purchase receipt or evidence of a purchase transaction. You may be able to contact a retailer or the seller of an item you bought an item from for a copy of a receipt or proof of purchase if you do not have one. In addition, you’ll have to provide pictures of the damages to your items, if applicable.
For all incidents of Theft and Vandalism, a police report is required to process your claim and receive repairs/replacement of your items. Online reports are accepted for any theft or vandalism valued LESS than $1,000. If the cost to repair/replace your items from theft or vandalism exceeds $1,000 then you need a copy of the physical report.
PHONE THEFT: For the theft of a phone to be eligible for reimbursement, you must be able to share your google location timeline to prove the last known location of the device prior to it being stolen. If you do not have the Google Maps mobile application installed on your device, you must do so in order for theft of the phone to be protected, or have a similar device tracking software/tool which is capable of displaying the last known location of a device with a timeline/history. A mobile app or tool such as iPhone’s “Find My” is not sufficient enough as it can only prove the present location of a device and cannot display a timeline/history of its location. If you have any questions regarding theft of phones or need assistance setting up a proper mobile app or tool, please contact us.
Note: if you registered prior to November 3, 2020, different terms may apply, please reference all terms and conditions.
How long does it take to receive payment for my Repairs/Replacement once my claim is approved?
After your claim is approved, we’ll transfer you funds to reimburse you for your repairs/replacement, less your deductible same-day!
Are Apple Store repairs covered?
After you file a claim on any of your Apple devices, typically you’ll be instructed to go to your closest Apple Store to a diagnosis, but if you don’t live near one, or need to mail your device in, someone from our team will help you with getting repairs done as fast as possible. If one of our repair partners near you is unable to fix your Apple device, we’ll help you with getting it resolved straight through Apple.
